Women of Music and their Influence on Fashion
From lounge singers to Broadway stars, some of our most glamorous creators brought high couture into the world of music. In past decades, female musicians were often consummate singers, dancers, and composers. Yet they did more than make beautiful sounds: their garments created a complete visual masterpiece.
The most influential women of music shaped fashion for the entire world — and often, they changed society as well.
Here are some of the most beautiful trends for modern weddings.
Hazel Scott inspired our ”Hazel” design
Hazel Scott was a jazz singer, pianist, and civil rights leader known for her groundbreaking performances. At just eight years old, Hazel won a scholarship to the prestigious Juilliard School. Her mastery of the piano made her a radio star. Known as the “hot classicist,” Hazel infused jazz and blues into well-known tunes. Eventually, she became a fixture of New York’s inclusive Café Society.
Hazel paved the way for greater representation in Hollywood by only accepting roles where she could showcase her talents. She refused any films that reduced African Americans to stereotypes. Hazel’s influence made her a creative hero, and she went on to become America’s first black TV host.
Hazel complemented her dazzling performances with spectacularly beaded gowns. She loved strapless and off-the-shoulder designs that highlighted her toned arms.

Doris Day inspired our ”Doris” design
From there, Doris continued to make waves as both a singer and an actress. Her beautiful voice and girl-next-door charm earned her top spots on both the radio and box office charts! She became a fixture of movie musicals, as well as an ingenue in many romances.
Doris’s legacy is reflected in today’s whimsical romantic comedies. Stars such as Renee Zellweger have drawn inspiration from Doris’s films.
When Doris glammed up, she favored luxurious fabrics, classy bodices, and floral details. She inspired our “Doris” design in our Evolution collection.

Judy Garland inspired our ”Judy” design
Hailing from vaudeville, Judy quickly became a fixture of the silver screen. Her melodious voice turned “Over the Rainbow” into an instant classic. She went on to play leading roles in big-budget musicals such as Meet Me in St. Louis and For Me and My Gal. Eventually, she evolved into a gifted dramatic actress, earning Oscar nominations for A Star Is Born and Judgment at Nuremberg.
Her musical career thrived as Judy sold out prestigious venues on her concert tours. The producers of Manhattan’s Palace Theatre praised her for reviving vaudeville after her October 1951 show shattered box-office records.
Judy appeared in many different gorgeous dresses throughout her career. When she glammed up, she preferred floral or feathered accents, off-the-shoulder sleeves, and flowing skirts. She inspired our “Judy” design in our Evolution collection.
